Safety week 2021 -The anatomy of Mistakes - Pete Allum

On wednesday we had skydiving legend Pete Allum over.

He gave a presentation on making mistakes and learning from them. "The master failed more often than the pupil ever tried"  certainly applies to him.

The most important thing is to understand how you react to mistakes and how you can get the right mindset to learn from them.

There is a tendency to be ashamed and avoid confronting the mistake, but this means losing an important learning opportunity. Learning from mistakes is an important key for a better life quality.

This is not limited to AFF students, but also very important for instructors and coaches. When they see their students struggling, coaches have to ask themselves: "What did I do wrong? What did I miss? What did I forgot to mention?"

By remaining a student for life, you not only get better at what you do, this trains your mind in a way that will give you a healthier life.

In order to learn from mistakes as a group, blamefree incident reporting on near misses is key. Pete points to the website camptocamp.org as an excellent example of incident reporting
The system we use at VVP is also a means to learn from near misses.

The presentation ends with a session of Q&A.

You can watch the recording of the session here.

In preparation of his presentation, Pete did some research and some of those sources you can find here.
